ICANN’s
North American Regional Meeting in New
Orleans
Last week, the Tralliance
team visited the Big Easy for this year’s ICANN North American
Regional Meeting. The four-day event
brought together members of ICANN (Internet Corporation of Assigned Names
and Numbers), accredited registrars, and registries such as .com, .org,
.mobi, .asia, .me, and .travel. As
part of ICANN’s role in the global coordination of the
Internet’s system of domain names, ICANN organizes regular meetings
with its stakeholders to ensure the Internet’s security and
stability.
The focus of the Regional
Meeting was to discuss in an open forum Internet policy, security, and the
future of the Internet. The
moderators of the meeting were Craig Schwartz and Tim Cole both of
ICANN. As a way to support the New Orleans community,
both Schwartz and Cole recommended the city for this year’s
meeting. With their combined
experience in working with recovery organizations and doing reconstruction projects
themselves, both ensured that the agenda of the meeting not only addressed
Internet issues, but true stories from New Orleans based businesses and the
post-Katrina steps in the recovery process.
As one of the highlights
of the Big Easy experience for all of the attendees, a local business,
directINC/Intercosmos, sponsored a post conference, southern hospitality
function. As a first to many, the
crawfish boil, followed by a trip to the world famous House of Blues was a
true taste of New Orleans.
